Painting our Hallowe'en House
On Wednesday, the Kindergarten students had the school all to themselves for most of the day since the rest of the students were attending Place. We decided to paint a large refridgerator box for our Hallowe'en celebration. We discussed how we should decorate the house and next day the students will make windows, a door and they think it should have spiders hanging from it.

Picture Day
Everyone sure looked handsome and beautiful today as they got their school photos taken.
We talked about what happens in Fall and the students had some great ideas.
Help your child to notice signs of Fall and then they can share them with the class.
We have been learning about the colors red, yellow and green and today we read
a story called "Red is Best". Ask your child what kinds of things she liked best when they were red and why?
During our activity time we had some very busy students who might be future engineers.
They were seeing how high a tower they could build before it came tumbling down.

A Swimming We Did Go!
June 11th
On Wednesday and Friday the Kindergarten students got to go swimming!
We did manage to miss most of the rain on Wednesday, but we were not
so lucky on Friday. The kids did not mind though since they were wet
anyway! Thank you to all the moms and dads who have come out to
help out at the pool. It is greatly appreciated!
Today we were introduced to subtraction in Math class.Ask your child to
share the number story with you for the ant math page they brought home
in their agenda today. We learnt some new words:minus or take away
(the ants were taken away when they got eaten by the birds or the frog)
and we reviewed the word equal. The children were so excited many of them
created their own subtraction stories! Good work Kinders!

Circle Square Ranch
The weatherman was smiling down on us today! We had a great
day with no rain until the bus ride home. The students had a
great time at Circle Square. First they got to ride horses
all by themselves. Then we had a wiener roast for lunch with
baked beans, potatoes and rice krispie cake and watermelon for
dessert. It was Yummy! Then we were off to the beach where
we floated on tubes and played along the shore. The hayride took us through
many interesting trails and we even got to see the bones from
the skeleton of a horse. The rock wall was our last stop and it
was awesome. Kindergarten are a real group of energetic rock climbers.
The rain started just as we were leaving the rock wall and it
sure made everyone head to the bus in a hurry.
Thank you to all the chaperones who came along with us. You
helped to make this a safe and fun filled day!
Also thanks to the Circle Square Ranch staff!
Ms Odland was took the pics and so we will have to wait until
she sends some to include in my post.

Our Field Trip to the Greenhouse-June 3, 2010
Today we took a trip to the greenhouse. We planted some plants and the pots even had little high heels for the ladies or shoes for the men. We then had a picnic lunch where we ate our lunch on blankets in amongst the flowers. We made a flower out of seeds that can be planted and will grow in our gardens at home. We used all of our senses to tour the greenhouse today; sight, sound, touch and smell. We even used our sense of taste. Yes we ate the leaves of a plant....some LETTUCE and SPINACH of course.
We got to see red worms as they made compost from food scraps. We also saw some different bugs and talked about how some bugs help plants to grow. We learnt about the different parts of the plant and what each plant part does.
We were very lucky for Mrs. Lutz to share the pansy story that was passed down from her grandmother. Overall we had a very fun-filled day!!!
Thanks to Mrs. Lutz and everyone else who participated.

Hurray for June!
June 1st
Thank you to all the parents
who filled out and returned the
forms with your child today. We
are hoping the weatherman is wrong
and it does not rain on Thursday but
either way we will still have a great
day at the Greenhouse.
We painted bees and we will add
more body parts to it next day as we
continue to learn about insects. Ask
your child if they recall the number
of legs they need to put on their bee.
Today we learned the action and sound
for Ww and reviewed all the letter sounds.
Your child completed a math page that was
sent home today. Ask them to tell you the
number stories that go with the pictures.
The students did very well at this beginning
addition task :)
I will publish another post following the
greenhouse tour on Thursday!

Happy Friday! Lots of Info!!
Happy Friday everyone. Thank you to parents who
brought bikes or helped out at the Bike Rodeo this
afternoon.
It was a busy day in Kindergarten, following a very
short week for the students. Today we learned the letter
sounds and actions for "ee" and "or". Last day we met
Buzz the bee who introduced us to the letter "z" sound.
We read Chicka Boom 1, 2, 3 and practiced our counting
forwards and backwards! The Bike Rodeo was fun, even
though it sure was a little chilly!
In your child's agenda there are many forms and letters
of information, including the permission forms for both the
Greenhouse and the Circle Square Ranch field trips. It is
very important that you fill out, sign and return these
forms with your child the next school day. I am including a
copy of the informational letters here for your convenience.
Have a Great weekend.
June is just around the corner and with it we hope to see some sunshine.
Thank you to all the parents who helped their child prepare for the oratory.
The students did a wonderful job! June will be filled with many busy days and although these dates will be included in the June school newsletter I wanted to provide you with some additional information as well.
June will see us completing our study of living things; plants and animals, with a visit to a greenhouse. This visit will take place on June 3rd in the morning. Although this is the same date as the Track and Field day, since the Kindergarten students are not participating in the events this should not pose a problem. The students will still be able to view some events in the afternoon and be given the opportunity to purchase items from the canteen as was noted in a previous letter.
In order for students to participate in the Greenhouse tour I need you to complete and sign the following permission slip and return it as soon as possible. Students will still need to bring a morning snack item and a lunch that does not require warming up(no glass items please). The students will be taking a bus to J & J Greenhouse, approximately 25 minutes outside of Melville. Here they will participate in a tour, do some planting and then eat their lunch before returning to school.
Kindergarten students will also be taking part in the Miller School Circle Square Ranch Field Trip. Although this is a school wide event, not all grades attend on the same dates. June 7th is the date that has been booked for the Kindergarten class to attend along with the grade 2 students. Once again since this date is nearing quickly we require you to return your permission slip as soon as possible. Additional information regarding this outing is included with your permission slip.
Swimming times have also been booked for the month of June. Please note kindergarten swim times on the June calendar. If you are able to join us during any of the scheduled times, please feel free to come and assist your child or join them in the pool.
Awards Day for Miller School has been set for June 25th at 2:00p.m. On this day the Kindergarten students will also be having their Kindergarten Celebration (Graduation) in the morning. The students will come to school as usual. Parents are then invited to come to join in the Celebration at 10: 30. After a short program, students and parents will enjoy a shared lunch together. In the afternoon, parents are then welcome to attend the
Miller School Awards day that will begin at 2:00 p.m. Since this will be the Kindergarten students final day of school, parents are encouraged to take home all their child’s belongings on this day.
I understand how busy families are, but if you are available to volunteer and assist for any of the above events, please let me know by calling me or indicating it in your child’s agenda.

Meeting the chicks!
Due to the Kindergarten Orientation on Friday, today was the first day that everyone could meet the chicks in person. We watched how they hatched out of their shells on the smartboard from a flipvideo that Mrs. Boake had filmed. The students were engaged and they "oohed" and "aahhed" as they listened to the hole in the egg peep! Later, they saw how the chick came out of its shell and because of his loud peeps we called him "Squawker". We colored the life cycle of a chick and drew our favorite chicks. It was an "EGG"CITING day in Kindergarten!

The Eggs are Hatching!!
Today was a busy day of hatching at Miller School. When I stopped by to check on our chicks this morning I found two chicks hatched out of their shells--Twins! When I checked on them at lunch, two other eggs had holes pecked in their shells and I could hear them peeping inside the shell. When I came back at 5:30 p.m.four more little, fluffy chicks were chirping in the basket. Thanks to Mrs.Dohms and the other staff who looked after the chicks! Now we are waiting for just one more egg to hatch. Take a look at the videos to see the hatching and chicks in action.

Springtime in Kindergarten
Happy Spring to all!
We have been busy, busy, busy in the Kindergarten classroom. We have been learning about living things. We planted bean seeds in clear bags and cups so we could watch how they grow and see the plant parts. We also learned what they need to grow. After reading "Jack and the Beanstalk" we think maybe our beans may be magic too since they are trying to grow up to the ceiling. We talked about how living things may start as seeds, some hatch and some are born. We are now incubating seven eggs in our classroom. We have been patiently waiting for them to hatch. We have counted back from 21 days and today we were on day 2. I think we may see some chicks after the weekend!
Today we planted our beans from our bags outside in a corner of the flowerbed. It sure was fun and the weather was great to share a story outside.
Have a great weekend!
